Homeless, but not friendless: Leela’s Story

Ganeshpuri, India—*Leela faces many challenges. At 35 years of age, she is homeless and has a developmental disability.

When she came to the Anukampaa Health Center (AHC) in May 2010, she was also pregnant and suffering from a very virulent form of malaria that seriously complicated her pregnancy.

Treating someone with limited mental capacity and no relatives or permanent address was not easy, but the AHC staff made a commitment to do so. The AHC assigned a staff member to take care of Leela regularly, and to give her the medications she needed for her own and her baby’s well-being.

On August 20, the AHC team joyfully reported that Leela had delivered a baby boy, and that mother and son were both healthy.

This case involved great effort and resources, and the staff is simply glad they were able to befriend Leela and provide the unique support she needed and could not find anywhere else.
