PRASAD Chikitsa, India
PRASAD's humanitarian work began in India's Tansa Valley, in the rural areas of Thane district. The initial programs were supportive in nature and included distribution of food, blankets, clothing and building houses for the poor and needy. In 1994, PRASAD formally established the PRASAD Chikitsa Charitable Trust to continue to expand and create meaningful programs for the people of Tansa Valley region. Presently free primary health care, including specialized eye care, milk, nutrition and education support to the needy and poor in the valley, forms the bulwark of the supportive program. Various community development programs are also underway to encourage communities to take an active part in shaping their destinies. Special Self-Help Groups (SHG) have been created which are managed by the villagers to help make them self-reliant. The utility of such groups is now widely acclaimed by all, including the government agencies, and they are now actively promoted to take charge of various initiatives launched by the government. PRASAD Chikitsa has not only worked to improve the lot of people in Tansa Valley but also has provided much needed disaster relief.
