Caring Is Part of the Care
CDHP Clinic Staff Surprise Girl with Christmas Tree

Karen with CDHP Dental Clinic Staff
Karen, age 8, has been coming to the CDHP clinic for about three years. “In the beginning, she was afraid, but she soon got comfortable with us, and now she loves coming,” says CDHP dental assistant Ivette Acosta.

As the 2007 holiday season approached, Karen had several visits scheduled to treat cavities. The clinic staff, who always decorate the clinic for various holidays throughout the year, brought in a two-foot, fully decorated artificial Christmas tree to brighten the waiting room area. Karen was very taken with this tree.

Wanda Nunez, the clinic receptionist, mentioned to Ivette how Karen would admire the tree, then look sad, saying, “I didn’t get one.”

Just five days before Christmas, Karen had an appointment at the clinic. After her treatment, she went straight to the tree, as always. Ivette asked if her family had gotten their Christmas tree yet. Karen said no - her family didn’t have the money to buy one.

Ivette and Wanda looked at each other. “Why don’t we give her this one?” Ivette suggested. Karen’s eyes opened wide in surprise and delight. They quickly called her father to get his permission. “He was ecstatic, giving his blessings and thanking us repeatedly,” said Ivette.

Karen wanted to take the tree right then, but since she had to go back to her classroom, Ivette and Wanda said they would bring it to her class room at the end of the school day. When they showed up with the tree, Karen was beside herself with joy, waving and grinning from ear to ear.

“It touched our hearts, to see how excited and happy she was,” commented Ivette. “Even though children come to the mobile dental clinic for dental care, it’s not just about the work. We feel happy whenever we make another child smile, whatever the reason.”
