New Annex boosts capacity at Family Health Center

FHC AnnexOn April 21, 2009, PRASAD Chikitsa broke ground for a 1,100-square-foot addition to the Family Health Center. By September 3, the new annex was built, painted, furnished and ready to welcome patients.

PRASAD Chikitsa’s Board and staff members enjoyed conducting an inaugural tour of the sunny, spacious, patients’ ward, rooms for private counseling, Anti-Retroviral Therapy andDay Care Ward exams, a dispensary, a laboratory and staff offices and upgraded sanitation. For the HIV-positive children, there is even a Day Care Center, complete with kitchen and bathrooms.

The HIV/AIDS program had a modest beginning in 2004 and, within five years, it has emerged as a leader in comprehensive care, treatment, education and prevention of HIV/AIDS.

HIV Awareness EducationThe Indian government has recognized the FHC as an HIV/AIDS Integrated Counseling and Testing Center (ICTC). This means that reports from the FHC receive international acceptance. The FHC is also now a Linked Anti-Retroviral Therapy Center (LAC). As a LAC, the Center receives free public educational materials, rapid HIV test kits, protective kits, Anti-Retroviral Therapy(ART) medicine and free staff training through India’s National AIDS Control.

”People from far and wide are referred into this program and they continue to come back (for regular treatment) as we endeavor not only to treat, but to heal, the patient,” says Dr. Surendra Yadav, who oversees the program.

“The program has set a benchmark in HIV and RCH care for the whole of Maharashtra state,” he added.
