PRASAD de México Begins Two New Projects for Children
PRASAD
de México held 16 eye camps in 2006, in which nearly 2,500 people
had eye surgery for cataract or strabismus (cross-eyed). The camps continue
in 2007 – 14 are scheduled – and two new projects also are underway,
both of which benefit children.
The first project finds and treats very young children and infants with congenital cataracts. The program had been offered in Mexico by another organization which, last year, performed eye surgery on 137 children. When the organization lost their funding, they approached PRASAD about helping to carry on the project. PRASAD has agreed to help with transportation costs and assistance to patients.
The second project is to help provide plastic surgery “camps” for children affected with the disfiguring conditions of harelip and cleft palate. PRASAD will help organize and promote the surgery camps. Local agencies will do the outreach, education and rehabilitation. Two camps will be offered this year, serving a total of 30 to 40 children.
Says Carlos Suarez, general director of PRASAD de México, “These new projects are beautiful opportunities that have a deep human impact and align with our mission to support those who need it most.”
