Meet Miguel Angel León Pineda!
Miguel Angel León Pineda was 40 years of age and still playing professional soccer when cataracts, linked to his diabetes, robbed him of his sight ten years ago. Miguel could no longer work and his mother, Marianna, has cared for him ever since.
Miguel doesn't have social security or disability income, and so he had little expectation of receiving cataract surgery – until his mother learned of Prasad de México’s eye camp in Tula, in Hidalgo state.
The PRASAD team was able to operate on Miguel and a few days later, doctors removed his eye patch. When Miguel saw his mother's face for the first time in 10 years, they both cried out of happiness and hope.
It is incredible to witness how this surgery can change the life of a human being. As Miguel Angel said, “Our sight is our life. I am living a dream; I thought I would never see the rainbow, the rain or the sun anymore.”
Prasad de México’s surgical team plans to operate on Miguel Angel’s other eye in the autumn. Meanwhile, Miguel Angel is doing something else that he has not been able to do for a long time; he is looking forward to a future of productivity and independence.
