PRASAD Scholars Give Back

In 1991, PRASAD began the Scholarship Program for high school and college students in the Tansa Valley. Varsha Parchure, who oversees the community development programs, explained why it is so hard for students to stay in school.

“Many students (in the Tansa Valley) stop going to school because they must go to work. Without an education, they won’t get good jobs. They, and their families, remain trapped in a cycle of poverty.”

Scholarship ProgramThe program helps talented pupils to complete their education and vocational training and to prepare themselves for employment in their own communities. So far, 635 students have benefited from the program.

When 127 of those students arrived at PRASAD’s offices on May 31, they had plenty of news to share with their peers, and with honored guests including representatives from Star Maza, the *Marathi News Channel.

Former scholars reported on their achievements, budding scholars spoke optimistically of the future and everyone expressed gratitude and a desire to give back to their communities.

Scholarship ProgramThanks to a donor-supported scholarship from PRASAD, and his own hard work, Jitendra Patil earned a Diploma in Education. He is a teacher in a remote village, where he gains satisfaction and self-confidence by extending himself for his tribal students. “As members of society, everybody has a responsibility to help those in need and I am trying to do this. I know it may be on very small level but I will continue for the rest of my life.” He added, “I am very thankful to PRASAD for providing me with this vision.”

Atul Patil is using his scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He spoke for all of the students when he said, “We all have ambitions in life but to realize them we require finance and guidance. Our parents do not always have the capacity to provide that, but PRASAD helped us. I know how much that support means to me so I will definitely pass it on to many who face the same situation.”

*Editors note: United News of India recently interviewed 17-year-old Shilpa Prakash Shirodkar, another student from PRASAD’s Scholarship Program.“Talking to UNI, (United News of India) Shilpa said she stayed in the initial period of her life at her maternal uncle's house, devoid of proper care and attention. Then a ray of hope fell in her life with the arrival of Prasad Chikitsa.” Read more
