A New Smile for Gulab Dental Care - India Case Study

Gulab before and after being fitted for dentures.

Gulab Jadhav, a 35-year-old brick factory worker from Ambharbhuir, lost three of her upper front teeth from tooth decay. On February 26, 2008, she visited the PRASAD Chikitsa Dental Clinic, which she had heard about through the free health camp that PRASAD Chikitsa had offered at the brick factory.

The dentist who examined Gulab told her that she would need dentures to replace the missing teeth. Because brick factory wages barely provide enough to live on, Gulab did not have the money to pay for her treatment and dentures, but the dental clinic staff assured her she would not have to pay; the treatment was free. Three days later, Gulab came back to have her new dentures fitted and was happy to show us her new smile!

PRASAD Chikitsa Dental Clinic saw a total of 265 patients in February 2008, and most were able to pay for part or all of their treatment costs. This policy - asking patients to pay if they can – helps to cover the costs of providing treatment to patients like Gulab and the 22 others who could not afford to pay that month.
