A PRASAD patient enjoys a healthy New Year
“Kedhar” welcomed the New Year as a happy man, free of Tuberculosis. When he came to PRASAD Chikitsa’s Anukampaa Health Center (AHC) in March 2009, Kedhar weighed less than 82 pounds and suffered from cough, fever and shortness of breath. He had consulted other doctors, without getting an accurate diagnosis. The patient’s name has been changed to protect his privacy.
The staff at AHC administered tests and a chest x-ray; the results confirmed that Kedhar was suffering from an untreated TB infection. In an odd coincidence, Kedhar’s first visit to the AHC was during the same week as World TB Day, on March 24, 2009.
TB remains a devastating diagnosis for anyone, but Kedhar is 70 years of age and lives over 10 miles from the AHC. The staff knew that treating this diagnosis presented a challenge and they began immediately.
“We placed him on a program of anti-TB drugs, and also began medication to control his diabetes,” said Dr. R.S. Pandey. By April 7, Kedhar’s blood work showed that the treatment was effective; his diabetes was in check, his cough had improved and he was breathing more easily.
Kedhar could not manage the 20-mile round trip from his home in Dongaste Village to the AHC, so a PRASAD staff did regular home visits and arranged for a local provider to administer his medication. Kedhar continued the TB treatment and finally, in October, his tests were all normal and his treatment team declared him free of TB.
After completing PRASAD’s comprehensive TB Treatment Program, Kedhar is well and happy, at his home in Dongaste Village.
