Disaster Relief

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, U.S.
When hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005, The PRASAD Project collaborated with Direct Relief International (DRI) to distribute emergency aid where it was most needed. With the help of DRI, we provided medicine and other essential supplies directly to health clinics in Texas and Louisiana that were serving evacuees from the affected regions.

Tsunami in Southeast Asia

In the aftermath of the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Southeast Asia in 2004, The PRASAD Project received thousands of financial contributions for relief efforts in the region, which we distributed through Direct Relief International. PRASAD volunteers also worked closely with local organizations, such as The Round Table, in Pondicherry, India, and Help for the Helpless, in Sri Lanka.

The PRASAD Project also sponsored a team of volunteer doctors who set up a mobile clinic in partnership with another non-government relief agency funded by Oxfam Australia.

In addition to providing immediate relief, it is The PRASAD Project’s practice to work with communities over time until they are back on their feet and living in a sustainable way. In the village of Kovalam, in Southern India, PRASAD volunteers and other aid workers helped the village fishermen to rebuild their damaged boats and replace their fishing nets. Through this collaboration, the fishermen were back on the water within just a month of the disaster.
