Village women access the refurbished well at Ghotgaon

While water is a sustainable resource, it is also a limited resource.

Some 3 in 10 people worldwide lack access to safe, readily available water at home, according to a report by WHO and UNICEF. In India, approximately 50% of the population have no access to safe drinking water, and the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t made this national problem any easier to handle.

In the Tansa Valley, many rural villages are without piped-in water, like the 35 households in Ghotgaon that are dependent on a single open well for their home water needs. The well had been in bad condition for some time, and gushing water from a nearby stream was eroding the soil surrounding it. Villagers were afraid that this year’s monsoons would cause it to collapse entirely.

Villagers asked local authorities for help to no avail. Then PRASAD Chikitsa stepped in to assist. Work began in mid-May and was completed in three short weeks despite the lockdown and labor shortages. The new concrete well wall will prevent further erosion and keep floodwaters from entering and contaminating the well.

Local resident Shubhangi Gahala said, “If the work had not been done, the well would surely have been leveled by the monsoons. Getting water would have been very difficult. But now our problem is solved! Thanks to PRASAD for the help on such short notice!”
