Matching Campaign for Clean Water – Double your impact!

According to a report by WHO and UNICEF, approximately 50% of the population doesn’t have access to safe drinking water in India.

In the Tansa Valley, women are responsible for the family’s daily water needs. To gather enough water, some women walk long distances under the hot sun. A day’s supply can take six trips carrying 15 liters or more each trip, potentially adding up to 10 miles a day.

This is burdensome, time-consuming work, but there is a solution – community wells. Located in village centers, community wells are reliable, easy to access, year-round water sources. PRASAD Chikitsa helps communities construct and maintain wells.

While community wells solve the important accessibility issue, they are open and can carry waterborne diseases, which can have a significant impact on a family’s physical health and economic well-being. Not only is there the cost of treatment and medication, but also lost income from missing work.

A water filter, however, solves this. PRASAD Chikitsa provides affordable household Candle Water Filters that are compact and easy to use. The filter ensures that water is safe and tastes good, and replacement candles are affordable and easy to find in local markets. It’s made a big difference for Anita and her family…

Anita Shankar Karpat lives in Lendipada hamlet with nine family members, including her five children. In Lendipada, most homes are scattered in the forest; there are limited livelihood opportunities, and there is no clean running water, so waterborne illness is common.

Like other households, Anita and her family only had the option of using untreated water from the central well. This meant constantly being at risk of becoming seriously ill, and, because the family depends on Anita’s husband’s daily wages, at risk of not having adequate money for living expenses, like food.

Anita is a member of the local Women’s Self-Help Group (SHG). Through a series of meetings and demonstrations, PRASAD Chikitsa introduced the Candle Water Filters to SHG members. Understanding that she could provide clean drinking water for her family, Anita immediately registered for the water filter. Now she and her family have safe water.

PRASAD is committed to helping communities have easy access to safe drinking water, and supporting the health and well-being of women and their families.

Our goal is to raise $31,000: $21,000 to build three community wells serving 400 people in each village, and $10,000 to provide 500 families with water filters at $20 per filter. Give today and DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT – the PRASAD Board of Trustees will match your donation, dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000.

Whether you’ve already donated or shared about PRASAD with your friends – thank you for helping to make the world a place where every person has access to basic services, and opportunities to improve, and live their lives fully.

Please consider supporting our clean water initiative by giving today.
